Prayer Guide Day 1 – Give Thanks
Tell everyone to sit down,” Jesus said. So they all sat down on the grassy slopes. The men alone numbered about 5,000. Then Jesus took the loaves, gave thanks to God, and distributed them to the people. Afterward he did the same with the fish. And they all ate as much as they wanted. Everyone was full…
— John 6:10-12
Most people ask God for His blessing on their food before eating. Jesus did something different — he gave thanks.
Thanking God for food is a simple idea. There are places in this world where people cannot eat a meal every day, much less three. So, thank God for the privilege to eat next time you sit down for dinner.
Each meal is a gift when you start with thankfulness as your baseline. Maybe this is the point of giving thanks — gratefulness. Three times a day you have the opportunity to be grateful and remember those who are hungry.
Many things you worry about will seem less significant if you can say, “I’m doing great today, I ate!” You’ll walk through the day more thankful and generous.
Steven, a twelve-year-old boy, courageously told his story through tears. He came from a family of ten kids. When soldiers attacked his village, his family made the dangerous march to safety through the jungles of Burma into the refugee villages of Thailand. Soldiers shot and killed three of Steven’s brothers just before they reached the border. Now, Steven is in an orphanage run by a long-time Hope for Dinner partner.
Steven glows when he smiles and talks about Jesus. He is a great student and wants to be a geography teacher. Hope for Dinner provides meals for children like Steven and his family.
Dear Jesus, thank you for this meal. Thank you that we can eat regularly. Help us to be grateful for food and let us not take eating for granted. Please teach us to be grateful and generous as we realize so many of the incredible blessings you have given us each day. Be with those who do not have a meal today. Help us to reach them with your love. Amen!
300 million children go to bed hungry each night around the world.
